IS IT YOUR CAREER? 😉

There is a hilarious 😂 😄 😜 slang making waves among young people in Nigeria today. It is said to playfully remind the second party that the matter in question is not exactly theirs to determine.

For instance, if one speaker mentions his love for a particular clothing line and the second speaker tries to talk him out of it; the first speaker can ask him

🤷‍♂️  “Is it your love?” or “ Is it your fashion?”

It is with this understanding that I am asking you dearly beloved parent, especially you who have suffered untold hardship in attempts to stir your ward in a particular career path: “ Wait oh 🤔, is it your career?”

Our children sometimes turn out looking so much like us that we are deceived into thinking they are an extension of us. We find ourselves wanting to live out our passions and desires through them. But ought this to be so?

I do not write to you as a parent that has overcome this tempting tendency. In fact, I am as guilty 😬 as you!

I began noticing my son’s love for drums 🥁 and thought of it as cute. Soon however it became a worry because I’m not sure I want a musician for a son  😟🙁😕. I mean, what will such a career choice speak of my person and my pedigree? So I began to subtly talk him out of that drumming flare. But who told me that drumming would stop my son from being a professional? Can he not attain any height of professionalism and still be a skillful drummer? 🤔

I recall the story of a family friend 👭. She is the proprietress of a school with about 25 years experience. As her daughter grew and passed examinations she thought the girl would make a fine doctor 👩🏾‍⚕  So she stirred her on and on till she wrote JAMB examination to be admitted into the university 🎓. This family friend made her daughter enter for microbiology 👩🏽‍🔬 with the hope that she would study medicine in her second degree. It was to her utter shock that when this daughter was to make the choice of an IT placement, she opted for a school!!!

The young lady had always loved to teach👩🏾‍🏫 plus she had chronic fear of blood.💉 💉

It was then that this proprietress began to connect the dots: her daughter was always excited to join Sunday school teachers and it was said that she was natural with the children.

Perhaps this mother noticed the traits in her daughter but waved it off, something about not wanting it to look like she was raising a child to take over her school. Why should that be a bother?

Another story comes to mind, of a child who desires to be a doctor. But he says he is aware that he needs education and he is too young👦🏽 to practice. So he is choosing to enjoy music 🥁🎼🎧🎷 thoroughly in his growing years while acquiring knowledge. Smart child! It is said that he even mentioned that if he stands in a hospital today as a consultant👨🏻‍⚕ ,how many persons will trust him with their health?

That boy deserves some candies 🍬🍭🍫for his good thinking!

Our children need us to hold their hands through life. To help them become all they are created to be. Remember that no two children are the same. No!! , Not even identical twins! 👩🏽‍👩

🏽So let’s pay attention to the things they love,💓❣ those things that come to them naturally. And let’s offer counsel and recommendations as we make observations, but let us fight the temptation to live out our desires through them.

We love our children and we would be satisfied to watch them grow into happy, confident adults. Allow your children choose career paths based on their capacities;

👨🏽‍🏭👨🏽‍💻💂🏼‍♀👩🏼‍🌾👨🏽‍🔧👩🏻‍🎨👩🏻‍ 🚀👨🏽‍🚒then guide and encourage them to be the very best at it.

Finally, old habits they say die hard. So when next you find yourself attempting to force a career choice on your child, ask yourself 🤔 and remember to chuckle when you do: “Hello o, is it your career?”

😜😝🤨🧐🤷🏼‍♀🤷🏼‍♂
